4/5/22: Day 15
Today I wanted to do something really different. I painted the paper black with ink first, let it dry, and drew on top with a white gel pen. It was pretty challenging to get my brain to think in the negative. I’ve spent so many decades using gray or black to draw on white paper that it was a little bizarre doing it backwards.
I love how this owl came out, and I’m going to make many more of these types of drawings. I’m looking forward to doing a whole series of woodland creatures and using different kinds of black and white drawing materials.

4/6: Day 16
I feel like I’m finally getting back into the flow of drawing, like I was years ago. The fear of messing up is melting away and I’m just having fun. The drawings are coming more easily to me now and I’m not putting too much pressure on myself to get it just right.
I continued the owl theme today but with graphite. I wanted to play with shading and have fun with graphic illustration. I love this little guy and really love how vastly different he is than yesterday’s owl.

4/7: Day 17
I’m feeling pretty anxious today. Preparing for our baby to come in a month or less has me a bit on edge. Yesterday I channelled that anxious energy into cleaning and organizing our home, today I set out to channel it into art making.
Art can be a great therapy for all sorts of mental challenges. I’m pretty sure this little robot is a self portrait of my exact state today.

4/8: Day 18
A super simple line bunny today. I did this one without drawing first in pencil and I’m pretty happy with the simplicity of it. I think I’ll make more line bunnies in the future.

4/9: Day 19
As a kid I used to catch moths inside and release them outside. Then I went through a period of being terrified of them as it always seemed they would fly into my face and hair whenever they were around. Now I’m back to admiring them, but from afar. Some moths are so beautiful, with bright colors and stunning patterns. The Luna has always been one of my favorite subjects to draw, it was a little odd doing it today with pencil instead of color, as their bright green is one of their most defining features.

4/10: Day 20
I was really feeling the Springtime today. I originally wanted to color this vase and flowers with rainbow colors, but didn’t feel like getting up to get out all different colors. Third trimester problems. I had a purple pen right in front of me, so purple it is! I actually like how this little doodle came out and had fun adding textures with the purple.

4/11: Day 21
Just a fun little robot doodle for today. I didn’t have a lot of time to draw so just jotted this one down with a micron pen. Better to do something quick than nothing at all!

Looking back on this week it’s interesting how much I stuck with monochromatic black, white, and gray for almost every drawing. Even the purple one is just purple. I struggled a lot this week with anxiety and extreme fatigue. Being 36 weeks pregnant is taking a lot out of me and I didn’t have the effort needed to put a lot of time into these drawings. I did actually do a lot of drawing in my sketchbook, which I’ll share another time!
