This week I’m aiming to use a lot of darker shades in my pieces. I want to play more with shading with pen and see where I can take it. Using a lot of dark tones is a big challenge for me but I’m going to push through my discomfort and do it anyway. That’s the only way to learn!
6/30: Day 73
I shaded this guy in with a black bic ballpoint pen. I think I’m going to need to use smoother paper if I want to keep working in ballpoint. The watercolor paper has a rough texture that catches the pen and makes it look scratchy a lot of the time.

7/1: Day 74
A micron monster. I had so much fun with this guy. I love the background too. He looks like a horrifying fish you’d find in the depths of the sea.

7/2: Day 75
I basically drew a thumb with a bowtie on it and went from there. I like this little weirdo, he looks like he’s all dressed up for an event!

7/3: Day 76
I was inspired by the octopus artwork in our bathroom for this little piece.

7/4: Day 77
A wacky little mushroom monster for today! I did this with a plain old ballpoint pen. He was real fun to draw and definitely makes me want to do many more mushroom characters.

7/5: Day 78
As much as I love drawing in black, white, and gray, I got a little tired of plain black ink, so I ordered a set of colored ballpoint pens, and I must say, I’m in love! I have loads of colored ink that can be applied with a brush, but with a newborn baby, the days of getting out brushes, spillable ink, and things that need to be cleaned are over for now. If I want to continue making art everyday, I need it to be as easy as possible for right now. I plan to play with these pens a lot more in the coming weeks, this teal monster is just the first jaunt!

7/6: Day 79
I had fun with this little robot, I drew the bot first then created a tiny scene around him. I love how nervous he is about the harmless butterfly floating overhead.

The end of another week! I’m glad I’m finding time to draw these days, the ten minutes I spend on these drawings make me feel like myself again and keep me creative.
Next week I’m looking forward to exploring my new pens some more and creating more little scenes to go with my creatures.
